Author, Jonah Lehrer, examines myths and truths of creativity

I was sent the following link on mind-bender, Jonah Lehrer, by a photographer colleague of mine and it makes me appreciate more fully the complexities of creativity, the continuation of self-education and application there of.  It also makes me a three-time consumer of Jonah Lehrer’s books and hoping that I will be able to understand more than 25% of the material.   A while back I attended a speaker series with Mr. Lehrer and as I died a slow humiliating death of intellectual suffocation, I forced myself to leave with a minimal comprehension of at least one of his concepts.  And I reveal this to you:  Common sense is not common.

Adding to his repertoire, Jonah Lehrer, author of  ”Proust and the Neuroscientist” and “How We Decide,” recently released, “Imagine: How Creativity Works.”    Check out the following Author Interview with Jonah Lehrer on Salon.com

Photographer, Eve Arnold. A Role Model.

We all have our favorites in the industry and Eve Arnold is one of mine — I use the present tense because lovingly, in this industry, we are blessed to stay connected to our deceased with physical reminders of their legacy that often aren’t associated with the physical reminder of a person whom we interacted with during their lifetime.  A life we have simply known through images.

My thoughts on her photography parallel the general critiques — a strong independent woman who captured truth and depth in her subjects.  A trailblazer for female photographers of our time — a brilliant role model for young women peering into the thought of a career in photography.

Here is the attached link from the NY Times that describes her contribution to the world of photography and a bit of her essence.

Life Lessons Learned Through Baking #1

I bake for the pure enjoyment of good-smelling mind therapy.  I’m also a prime candidate for a good metaphor.  Combine the two and it’s a really great day.

Today’s recipe for Candied Citrus Peels:

“Prepare the peels and boil in hot water for five minutes.  Drain the water, refill with fresh water, boil again for five minutes.  Repeat this process three more times, each time with fresh water.  This removes the bitter flavor from the peels.”  And to gild the metaphoric citrus-peel-lily, “…let the peels sit overnight to dry and coat them thoroughly in sugar.”

In an airtight container, they will last for about a week;)

Amen to that.

A Guide to Working With Consultants

This is a great piece about working with consultants, written by Suzanne Sease, as posted on aphotoeditor.com.

As a marketing consultant for photographers, I have a natural curiosity about other consultants — a little bit of insight as to how someone else runs their business or a spark of inspiration for approaching a project.  I am consistently impressed with the women mentioned in this article.  I have crossed paths with a couple of them and know of their esteemed reputations.

We each have our own styles and appropriateness for certain aspects of marketing.  What seems to connect us are the principles of integrity for our clients and the craft of photography.

Enjoy the read.

Book Review: David Sedaris, “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk”

I never seem to read all the books I want to read, plan on reading, stack next to me on my bedside table, read reviews on, purchase and have waiting for me on my Kindle, etc.  That being said, David Sedaris has been grandfathered into the top spot on my reading list whenever he has anything to say that gets bound between two book covers.

A long-time friend, Art Director and musical collage hobbyist, Gary Stamps, introduced me to David Sedaris long ago at a book reading and signing at Rizzoli Bookstore  in San Francisco (RIP: Swallowed by mega-bookstores in early 2000′s).  Me and my wide-eyed amazement left the store with a signed copy of Naked.

Read on for NPR’s book review.  It’s the cheater’s version of a review — I agree with everything they say and appreciate that they are so much more articulate.  I think David would approve (and then make fun of me for blogging).
